What is Content?

This post looks at the first three components of our content definition and offers tips on how to put them into practice.

Please send us an email at

1. Information

What are you communicating Information, as we define it here, is the key idea that the audience needs to know and the key details (evidence, explanation, and example) that support those ideas. This can include your messages, slogans, etc. Taking some notes before you start researching and writing will help you structure your research and writing.

2. purpose

Why are we doing this? In other words, what do you want our audience to think/do/feel? Content is only successful if we design it in such a way that it achieves one or more specific goals. Quantifying the desired results before starting work on the content guides our thinking and writing. This may also include calls to action given to you by the marketing or sales team.

3. people

Who are the people we want to reach? Too often we create content without fully considering our audience. Explicitly name the people you want to reach, their concerns and their questions. This is where relevance and resonance meet. I’m not a big fan of multi-faceted buyer personas, but it helps to dig deeper than “leads” or “people 18-25”.

Want to Write For Us?

Yes, you. We’re always looking for new authors. If you’ve got an idea that will challenge our readers and move our industry forward, we want to hear about it. But you don’t need to wait for an idea redefining web design. Just aim to give readers a fresh perspective on a topic keeping you up at night.

We’ll be honest, though: writing for Digital Life Hackers takes work. We want your article to be at its best and will push you to get there. Once accepted, you’ll get extensive feedback from our team, and you’ll work closely with an editor on revisions.

It’s also rewarding. Thousands of your peers (and potential employers, clients, or publishers) will read your work, and you’ll also learn a lot in the process—about communicating your ideas and writing. Even about the topic you thought you knew so well when you started.

What we’re looking for

You may submit a rough draft, a partial draft, or a short pitch paired with an outline. The more complete your submission is, the better feedback we can give you. Remember that we only accept original content—we do not publish anything that’s remain published elsewhere (including on your blog).

How to submit

Email us your submission. We prefer submissions as Google documents so editors can quickly provide feedback and guidance directly within your draft. You may also send us a plaintext file, a Markdown file, or a link to an HTML document. (Please do not send a ZIP file of assets unless requested by an editor.)
