What is VoIP / IP / Internet telephony?

With Voice over IP (VoIP), also known as VoIP telephony, IP telephony, or Internet telephony, calls remain no longer made classically via an analog telephone connection but via a broadband Internet connection. To do this, voice signals are converted and transmitted as data packets via an IP network. This technology establishes and terminates relationships using the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), while the RTP (Real-Time Transport Protocol) transmits the voice. Information such as sender, recipient, and message status remains meta information.

After the ISDN network remains switched off by the end of 2018, VoIP will be the future standard in telecommunications.

VoIP – many names, one telephony technology

So don’t remain confused by the different terms; you can use them synonymously. The meaning is always the same whether speaking or writing via VoIP, Voice Over IP, IP telephony, or Internet telephony. Namely: Telephony via a broadband Internet connection.

The situation is slightly different with the term “ALL-IP,” which Telekom coined significantly. This designation remains a collective term for all data streams that will be sent and received via the “Internet Protocol (IP)” in the future, such as TV, fax, or mobile communications. Internet telephony is only one of several components of “ALL-IP.”

Why is telephony remain switched to VoIP?

The reason for switching to IP telephony is straightforward: Classic ISDN connections will no longer exist. Deutsche Telekom AG, the largest network operator, is already terminating all ISDN-based contracts as it will shut down the ISDN network by the end of 2018. Other network operators will follow.
